Theatre for young minds

We deliver music, movement and performance projects for young people from disadvantaged groups across South East Kent. Inspired by the works of Shakespeare, our workshops open the door to creativity, helping young people express themselves, build their confidence and support their mental wellbeing through the power of performance and shared experience.

Creativity in action

Take a look at what Ruff Necks is working on right now. From workshops and community outreach to new collaborations with schools, youth groups and community partners, this is where we share the latest news on our projects that are helping young people explore their creativity and build confidence through performance.

Our reason why

Our Philosophy

We believe that creativity has the power to change lives. Through movement and music, young people can explore their emotions, build confidence and feel part of something bigger than themselves. Ruff Necks creates inclusive, supportive environments where young people feel safe to express, move freely, discover new skills and experience the positive impact of the arts on mental wellbeing.

Community Connection

Whilst the performative elements of our work are centred around young people, Ruff Necks is all about bridging societal gaps and working with all members of our community - young, old and everything in between. We truly believe in the benefits of storytelling and sharing skills generationally. We love working creatively with local partners, like library knitting groups, whose costuming skills and stories to share are invaluable resources.

Creative Expression

During our workshops and creative process, young people are encouraged and supported to stage, choreograph and compose their interpretation of a Shakespeare play. Guided by active performers, qualified teachers and experienced facilitators, our participants’ skills are nurtured, nourished and allowed to flourish to their fullest potential. Through the very act of creativity, we are given a lens to experience new perspectives, reframe our lived experiences and gain an understanding of our abilities and our boundaries of self and with others.

Positive Wellbeing

In the UK right now, 1 in 5 young people has suffered with a mental health concern, with emotionally based school avoidance rising 187% since the pandemic. Drama has been used as a form of therapeutic intervention since the 18th Century, but most young people surveyed only access it in the curriculum once a week, if ever. Here at Ruff Necks, we know that our projects provide the space for creative expression that promotes self-discovery by reducing stress through emotional release. These shared experiences allow us to process complex feelings and scenarios, whilst building a better sense of wellbeing.
